How do I know if my roof is leaking? A stain that appears or grows after rain usually points to the roof, a flashing or an overflowing gutter.
Free, two minutes: Is your roof warning you? 12 things to look for.
The signs
Water stains or damp patches on the ceiling after rain, mould in a corner, drips, bubbling paint near the eaves, or daylight through the roof space.
What you can check safely
From the ground, look for cracked, slipped or missing tiles, lifted sheets, rust and crumbling ridge capping. Note whether the stain changes after rain. If you can look in from the manhole with a torch, do, but do not walk across the ceiling. Stay off the roof.
If water is coming in now
Put buckets down, keep clear of any sagging ceiling, and if water is near lights or power points switch off that circuit if the switchboard is dry and safe to reach. Storm damage letting water in: call the SES on 132 500.

Quick answers
Is a ceiling stain always a roof leak?
Not always. If it appears in dry weather or sits under a bathroom or kitchen, it may be a plumbing leak.
