How do I know if my hot water system is broken? No hot water is not always a dead system. Check the simple things first, then call a licensed plumber.
Free, two minutes: Who should I call? Problem to trade.
Safe checks first
Electric: look at the switchboard for a tripped hot water circuit and reset it once. On an off-peak tariff the water may just not have reheated yet.
Gas: check the gas is on at the meter or bottle. Go no further than the instructions on the unit.
Solar or heat pump: check the booster switch and the controller.
Signs it may be failing
Water leaking from the base of the tank often means the tank is on its way out. Rust-coloured hot water, rumbling noises, or hot water running out much faster than it used to are worth a plumber's look.
Who to call
A licensed plumber for the hot water system. An electrical fault may also need a licensed electrician, and gas units need a licensed gasfitter. Leaking from the base: today.

Quick answers
Why is there no hot water?
Often a tripped circuit, an off-peak tariff that has not reheated, or the gas being off. If those are fine, call a licensed plumber.
Is a leaking hot water system an emergency?
A leak from the base usually means the tank is failing. Turn it off as the instructions say and call a licensed plumber today.
