Is your smoke alarm working?
Three checks, two minutes.

Press the test button, check the date on the back, and know what the chirp means.

How do I know if my smoke alarm is working? Press the test button, check the date on the back, and know what the chirp means.

1. Press the test button once a month

Hold it until it sounds. If the alarms are interconnected, they should all go off. If nothing happens, or only one sounds, it needs attention.

2. Check the date

Every alarm has a manufacture date on the back. Over 10 years old, or no date at all, means replace it.

3. Listen and look

A short chirp every minute or so usually means a low battery. A yellowed case often means an old alarm. Dust or cobwebs in the vents can stop it working: vacuum it gently every six months.
